All by myself

I have never lived alone.

I just realized that.

I went from my parents' house to my college dorm, where I lived with the girl who became my best friend. Then I moved into an on-campus apartment with two other girls. After that, I moved into an apartment with Dave. And here I am.

My god, for the last 10 years, I haven't even had my own BEDROOM.

But that is about to change for 6 weeks, when Dave goes to China for research work.

He leaves in less than a month and I'm just now processing what that will mean for me. Mostly, I'm going to miss him a disgusting amount. But part of me? Well, part of me is looking forward to this flash of complete and utter self-reliance. I'll cook for myself, parent by myself and focus exclusively on myself. (Okay, fine, sometimes I do that last part whether he's around or not.)

It's a strange feeling. I don't want him to go, but I do want to see how this Miss Independent thing will play out...

Let's do an over-under on my sloppy, drunk mental breakdown that will occur in which I have full-on conversations with my dog, name my cell phone, dress my pillows in Dave's sweatshirts and pass out at the table every night into a bowl of cereal, the only food I can cook.

Well I think we all knew this was going to be very interesting but this really is a new lens. I, for one, am really looking forward to having a wine-soaked wingwoman for a few weeks. We should do a weekly potluck.

it will be fun and you will learn a lot about yourself, that's for sure. :) matt was gone for six MONTHS (as in 180 days), and it was hard, but looking back i'm pretty proud of myself!

the best part is, you can sleep like a starfish in the middle of the bed, you don't have to share the covers or the wine. :)

And then I realized I hadn't had my own bedroom for 13 years since I shared a room with my sister before I went to college.
*mind BLOWN*
let me know if it works for you and I'll send my Hubby to China too.

Living alone is great. In fact, as I think about getting married in the next couple years and having to give up my own place, it actually kind of makes me sad! Enjoy it!

TKTC: YES PLEASE

Rachel: You should be proud -- that's a long-ass time! Also, I don't share the covers or wine now ;-)

Rachel: Haha, I'll keep you posted.

Secretlysupergirl: I actually understand that. And I'll definitely try to enjoy it!

I can't wait to read the posts that occur during and after his trip, as I'm sure they'll be fun.

What's interesting about China is the time difference. Throughout the year, they are 12 and 13-hours ahead of us. My wife travels there for work three times a year and is gone for several weeks at a time. And yes, you literally feel like you're living alone. Because when you wake up, they're going to bed. And when you go to bed, they're waking up.

LOL. So it will be interesting, but I think you'll have fun too. It's always ok to have some "you" time for rest and relaxation.
